Sustainability at the station shopping centre

cyber-Wear develops re-usable coffee cups for the opening of a REWE To Go store in Mainz.

It has become a matter of course for us to buy a coffee while we're on the go and drink it as we walk. In most cases we use one cardboard cup with a plastic lid for each coffee. Garbage that is easy to avoid. The new shops of the REWE To Go chain offer products almost around the clock in central locations such as the city centre and railway stations. At a time when life is moving faster, when people's wishes and habits are changing and there is increased demand for out-of-home catering, customers are happy to accept what these stores offer. However, few consumers give much thought to the packaging of the products they buy. The coffee cups, for example, usually consist of glued cardboard with a proportion of plastic, making recycling impossible.

In the course of the opening on 27.06.2019 of the new REWE To Go store in Mainz, cyber-Wear developed 1,500 re-usable coffee cups in the station shopping center design in order to set an example for sustainability. REWE To Go is offering these cups free of charge to the first 1,500 customers with every coffee ordered, or after a certain amount has been spent. The to-go cup and lid are made of double-walled plastic. The lid can be screwed on and therefore offers particularly good protection against leaking. The cup is manufactured in Germany, is BPA free and 100% recyclable, making it a perfect alternative to ordinary cardboard cups.

Enjoying a quick snack before the train leaves and buying a few presents: you can do a lot more at stations today than just wait for a train. They are also very special places: gateways to the city and windows to the world. Areas with flair. They offer an atmosphere that invites you to stroll around, experience things, shop and enjoy yourself. And all this seven days a week and almost around the clock. Under the "My station shopping centre" brand, the shops in the stations present their products and invite shoppers to enjoy a varied programme there. There are 44 of these railway station shopping centres in Germany, including Cologne, Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt am Main. Deutsche Bahn has extensively renovated the main stations and turned them into an attractive place to shop and meet.
